Press release

Sol LeWitt Vehicles seem to merge Yang’s previous interests; e. g. notion of vehicles and modular structures. With Dress Vehicles (ongoing, since 2011) Yang has been pursuing a notion of movement, while the series of suspended white blind sculptures (Sol LeWitt Upside Down, ongoing since 2015) investigate the equally rigorous and mesmerising cube permutations of minimalist artist Sol LeWitt’s (1928–2007) Modular Structures. Unlikely to previous Vehicles, Sol LeWitt Vehicles is made to be performed by handles outside, instead of inside. Therefore, the sculpture requires multiple people to coordinate themselves, which stresses the idea of collective performativity. Constructed with aluminum frames on casters and equipped with white venetian blinds, Sol LeWitt Vehicles evoke the legacies of choreographed geometry and geometric progression, and bridging the static and the dynamic.
